Vision Care For Now & The Future

The risk of developing eye problems can increase due to aging. However, having regular eye exams can help you manage these problems before they cause permanent damage to your vision.

Each exam includes a comprehensive assessment of your visual quality and eye health. If your optometrist notices any abnormalities, they can take the necessary steps to help protect your eyes.

Please, book your next eye exam today!

Why Are Eye Exams Important?

Eye conditions and diseases often develop asymptomatically. In some cases, you may have an eye disease for years without noticing any symptoms until your vision is permanently damaged. The only way to protect your eyes from asymptomatic diseases is by having regular eye exams.

For adults between the ages of 18 and 64, the American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends having an eye exam at least once every 2 years, or annually if you’re “at-risk.” However, most optometrists agree you can achieve the best results if you have annual eye exams, whether you’re at-risk or not.

For seniors over 65, AOA recommends annual eye exams. There is a higher chance of developing particular eye issues such as cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma after this age. The best way to safeguard your sight is by having an eye exam.

You’re considered to be at-risk if:

  • You or your family has a history with eye conditions
  • You have medical issues that can affect the eyes
  • You take medications with ocular side effects
  • You have had eye surgery
  • You have had an eye injury
  • You have a high refractive error
  • You wear contact lenses

The Eye Exam Process

At the beginning of your exam, your optometrist will have a detailed conversation with you regarding your physical and eye health. This is an excellent opportunity to let your optometrist know of any questions or concerns you might have about your eyes.

Your optometrist will also confirm that your health and family history are all up to date. Any information you can offer will help your optometrist tailor the exam to match your needs.

After this discussion, we’ll move on to checking your vision and refraction. Checking your visual acuity will help your optometrist determine how well you see. Your optometrist will use a variety of tools, including an eye chart and a phoropter, to determine your prescription.

Following this, your optometrist will then examine your eye health. To do this, your optometrist may use fundus photography, Optomap imaging, tonometry, and more. With these tests and technologies, your optometrist will be able to detect issues like cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diseases caused by diabetes.

Eye exams can also give your doctor insight into your overall health, detecting problems like diabetes or high blood pressure, before you may start to notice symptoms.

Glasses & Contact Lenses

If your optometrist determines you need glasses or contact lenses, they will introduce you to our wonderful opticians to find something to suit your needs and lifestyle.

If you’re looking for glasses, our opticians will take detailed measurements of your face to ensure your glasses sit firmly and comfortably. At Hazleton, Stroudsburg, Pottsville and Nanticoke Eye Specialists (formally Evans Eye Care), we also offer an incredible selection of lens treatments to improve and protect your vision.

If you’re interested in contact lenses, our optometrists and opticians can help you find the perfect contacts to suit you. Our opticians will also happily provide you with an informational session to teach you to properly use and take care of your contact lenses.
